Counting On A Win

Title: Counting On A Win

Author: Marcie Aboff

Illustrator: Len Epstein

Recommended Grade Level: K - 2

Common Core Standard Addressed: Counting and cardinality, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number in Operations in Base Ten, Measurement and Data

Summary: This story is about a family that goes on vacation, they go on the boardwalk where they can get on rides and play carnival games for a few tickets. Jodi's little brother Max wants a particular prize, Freddy the Frog. Jodi hasn't been lucky yet, but perhaps she needs a few more tries. Will she get lucky? She has to count her money and see if she can add up for another chance.

Rating: **** I highly recommend this book becuase it teaches the mathematical concepts of the value and counting of money. The book provides a situation that many children find themselves in when going to Amusement Parks and they want that "big prize" so to see a book that targets that, is quite helpful for children of that age.

Classroom Ideas: Upon reviewing several mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, problem solving and the value of money, I would read the book as a reinforcer and would make up problems for the students to solve, like the ones that appeared in the book. In their own life scenario with money and tickets if THEY were to go on a vacation with their family. Using manipulatives (bills, coins and tickets) each studet would recive a sheet of paper with a similar problem that was addressed in the book and they would have to solve it.
