Summary: The story is a version of the children's song, Ten Little Monkeys. It is the story of an adventurous ride down a snowy hill by ten animals aboard a slide. Along the way, one by one, each rider falls off until there remains one. The story is told in a colorful illustration, using rhyming words and humor. It is a great read-a-loud for grades K-1 for mathematical purposes. With the use of the numbers 1 thru 10, readers find themselves counting backwards and using subtraction.
Rating: **** I would definately recommend this book as part of a Math lesson in subtraction for grades K-1st.
Classroom Ideas: The book incorporates new vocabulary words such as a caribou, muddled and bailed which can be incorporated into an ELA lesson. For second language learners there are many examples of how action words can be expressed in various ways.
